Nannette Romero Regua, a college History instructor at Evergreen Valley College, holds degrees from San José State University, CA and Sarah Lawrence College, NY. Regua has been a volunteer in the Mexican and Mexican American community in San José for over a decade.

Regua specializes in American, Ethnic American, and Women's History.  She began her interest in history by researching the United Farm Workers (UFW) union and its founders Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.  As a graduate student,  she volunteered for the UFW, organizing strawberry pickers in Watsonville, CA.

Regua was delighted by the opportunity to compile this photographic history of Mexicans and Mexican Americans in San José through the generosity of community members who shared their family photos, and local archival and institutional collections.

Regua emphasizes in the book the importance of highlighting local leaders, but also women and the unsung heroes and heroines in San José.   She is currently conducting oral history interviews of Chicana activists in San José.

Villarreal is a professor of Ethnic Studies and Anthropology at Evergreen Valley College in San José. His research and writings have focused mainly on local Chicano and Mexican culture.  Watch a digital storytelling video of Villarreal discuss San Jose Lowrider Culture.

When not teaching or engaging in research, Villarreal enjoys spending quality time with his family at local parks such as Alum Rock Park, the beach, and traveling.

He hopes that this work will inspire further research about a people and city of which relatively little has been written about. Villarreal regards the book as a gift to all the citizens of San José for all that San José has given him.

He contends that the book gives the reader an understanding and appreciation of how internationally important San José always has been and will continue to be,  and that its because of all its citizens, including Mexicans of San José.
